I'm working on a scholarly project and would like to use copyrighted images. How do I know I'm doing this correctly?
Answer
Copyright and Fair Use guidelines can be very gray, but here are some starting points:
- Search Google Images with the 'Tools / Usage Rights / Labeled for noncommercial reuse' options. Those would be the safest images to use via Google.
- Although copyrighted, you might look for images in our VisualDX or AccessMedicine collections.
- Follow the guidelines of the Visual Resources Association (see attached):
-
- Ensure that all users know these may be copyrighted images and not to re-use them.
- Place access restrictions upon your project. You should be fine here if you are using D2L.
- Provide attributions to known copyright owners of the images (and any works depicted in the images).
- Emphasize to users that the project is to be used in the educational, not-for-profit context.
