I'm working on a scholarly project and would like to use copyrighted images. How do I know I'm doing this correctly?

Answer

Copyright and Fair Use guidelines can be very gray, but here are some starting points:

  1. Search Google Images with the 'Tools / Usage Rights / Labeled for noncommercial reuse' options. Those would be the safest images to use via Google.
  2. Although copyrighted, you might look for images in our VisualDX or AccessMedicine collections.
  3. Follow the guidelines of the Visual Resources Association (see attached):
    • Ensure that all users know these may be copyrighted images and not to re-use them.
    • Place access restrictions upon your project. You should be fine here if you are using D2L.
    • Provide attributions to known copyright owners of the images (and any works depicted in the images).
    • Emphasize to users that the project is to be used in the educational, not-for-profit context.
