Why is there a fee for interlibrary loan requests?

Libraries can circumvent some of the cost of obtaining articles through their subscriptions.  In some cases UTSW users may need access to resources that are not covered in our subscriptions.  In those cases, we will request a copy of or borrow that resource from a local or regional institution that has access to it.  Some institutions will provide that article or book at a cost; others for free.  Access to medical literature often incurs a fee and we ask our users to help us maintain this valuable service by helping us front those costs.  Unless the library we borrow from has a reciprocal agreement with us or is part of a consortia like SCAMeL or TexShare, we are charged at least $10.00.
 
The new fee chart was implemented on July 1, 2017 and is as follows:
